Founder's Profile

Dr. Johannes Tacken was born in 1952 in Germany. After his army service in an engineering battalion he studied mining at RWTH Aachen University of Technology from 1974 to 1980. After finishing his degree in mining he worked in lignite mines in Germany and the Philppines, and was awarded the degree of a Ph.D. in engineering in summer 1987.

Dr. Tacken gained his professional experience in open cast mining in Germany (Rhenish lignite area) and the Philippines (introduction of the first bucket wheel excavators in a coal mine in SE-Asia), as director of sales for a German mining equipment factory (Halbach & Braun / DBT) and as an independent consulting engineer with projects worldwide. He joined IfB (dt. Ingenieurbüro für Bergbau) in October 1987 as the sole partner of Prof. Jürgen G. Voss (†2001). In 1997 Dr. Tacken re-structured the company into IfB Mining Consultants Dr.-Ing. Tacken GmbH + Co. KG. Besides he was in charge as project manager and/or head of the mine planning group in mega projects in Armenia (due diligence, mine planning and modernization of a copper–molybdenum open pit), Russia (copper, iron ore mines), Mauritania (iron ore mine) and Spain (green field copper project). Furthermore he also has a vast experience in artisanal scale mining (ASM) with a focus on Africa (Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Zimbabwe and Sudan). During the past decade Dr. Tacken was repeatedly involved in projects as independent lender’s engineer for international bank consortia. Through his various positions and his long track record of successful projects he covered most aspects of the mining industry, namely research, lecturing, mining operations, manufacturing and sales of mining machinery and finally consulting in projects all over the world.

Working with Associates

IfB works with associated engineers and scientists of different backgrounds and specializations for the execution of engineering-, research-, consulting and management services. IfB offers services for the entire spectrum of the mining industry and its related fields. The range of services is based on a broad and long-standing experience in the engineering and consulting business worldwide.

Dr. Tacken is a member of the following professional organizations:

-    GDMB Gesellschaft für Bergbau, Metallurgie, Rohstoff- und
     Umwelttechnik e. V.
-          Vereinigung der Alten Aachener Bergakademiker e. V.
The Southern African Institute for Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM)

IfB is a member of:

- FAB Fachvereinigung Auslandsbergbau in der Wirtschaftsvereinigung Bergbau

IfB can report on and sign off reports on ressources and reserves for numerous commodities in compliance with international reporting standards like JORC.

Specialized Teams

...for each Individual Project!

As the continuous advance in technology asks for specialization to cope with the work required for optimized design and processes, it is obvious that no individual company will hardly have the expertise for each one of the specialized fields among its employees. Therefore IfB selected this special form of an engineering association for its organization, where out of an existing pool of expertise working groups will be formed for each special task. Due to its form of organization it is the superior aim of IfB to form special working groups which exactly meet the requirements for the individual projects.

Combining Expertise

International and Local

Wherever possible, we try to combine international and local expertise to ensure the most effective planning and execution of the works. Based on more than 30 years of experience in the consulting field for natural resources in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas extensive know-how and experience has been accumulated to serve the industry worldwide. Besides the cooperating experts and individuals IfB has built up a worldwide network of co-operating companies and offices.
